Smokers

Updated: Dec 1, 2023

JED, Devon-raised lyricist recently dropped vibrant Hip-Hop track, 'Smokers', which tells listeners a story over an old-school instrumental produced by Lethal Needle.

JED's rapping style can be described as raw, honest and flowing. He is an excellent storyteller throughout his songs. He is not afraid to speak freely about his experiences with mental health, dating and other societal topics that we hear in his other recent single 'Pride Will Win' featuring Breiya May. In 'Smokers' we observe a more playful side to JED, through his flamboyant lyrics that become more funny and self-deprecating as the song goes on.

Listeners are lead through a vivid narrative in the first two verses, peppered with bold, funny and outrageous lines. I love the way a story is told, as JED speaks so casually to his listeners as if he is on the phone having a friendly chat with you. We get an insight into JED's mind and personal life through his openness throughout 'Smokers'. This is reinforced by the bluesy beat which begins with voices laughing as if at a pub, vividly setting the scene and reflecting the title 'Smokers', which can be perceived as the 'smoking area' of a pub or club. The music video for 'Smokers', brings the strong imagery in the song to life, as he spends the day with a mate in various locations, telling him the story he raps, and chats up a girl in the smoking area of a pub.

JED will be releasing his upcoming debut project, Saturday to Sunday, which we look forward to hearing. Check out JED's single on our Spotify playlist here. Subscribe to our WYS mailing list here to receive updates about the freshest drops in the UK music scene.
